Pacquiao To Announce Next Opponent Friday

According to a report by ESPN.com, former champion and future Hall-of-Fame inductee Manny Pacquiao will announce his next opponent on Friday. Will this be his last professional fight before heading into retirement? Inquiring minds want to know. The announcement will take a page out of the LeBron playbook and be televised on TruTV, home of Top Rank’s Friday Night Knockout series. Opponent speculation took center stage after Pacquiao announced he recovered from shoulder surgery and was ready for his next bout. (As you recall, Pacquiao injured his shoulder during preparations for the Mayweather fight last May and required surgery in the aftermath.) Lacking a surplus of warm welterweight bodies in the Top Rank stable it’s fairly apparent…

Soro Crushes Tapia In Four, Monaghan Wins By UD

NEWARK — Hometown favorite Glen Tapia saw his momentum stymied once more by a bout ending KO. On truTV’s second installment of Friday Night Knockouts, presented by Top Rank, Michel Soro battered Tapia to win by TKO in the 4th round of action. Looking lethargic and slow footed, presumably due to the the previous day’s struggle to make weight, Tapia started well but soon began to show signs of frustration as Soro put together an effective offensive attack. Connecting with combinations to the head and body, Soro took control of the tempo evading Tapia’s punches and forcing him to fold up defensively for protection. Continuing his attack in the fourth round, Soro outgunned the Jersey…

Beltran Defeats Ao By 2nd Round KO, Title Still Vacant

LAS VEGAS —  Raymundo Beltran came out and did what was expected in spectacular fashion. Unfortunately for him, the WBO title doesn’t go home with him. On Friday night, in the Chelsea ballroom at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Beltran decimated Takahiro Ao in round two of action to emerge victorious. Taking the fight to the southpaw early, Beltran fired on all cylinders from the opening bell landing clean, crisp combinations upstairs. Rendering Ao ineffective with quick combinations. Easily dominating round one, Beltran kept up the same blistering pace in round two. Walking Ao down, Beltran battered the Japanese southpaw into submission ultimately dropping him with a huge lead right. Surviving the count, Ao regained his footing long…

Beltran’s Title Hopes Dashed, Misses Weight Limit

LAS VEGAS — Raymundo Beltran once again finds his title hopes dashed, this time by the scale and not defeat. On Thursday at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Beltran failed to make the 135 pound weight limit after two attempts, thus making him ineligible to compete for the vacant WBO light weight title. His competitor Takahiro Ao, who made weight with little difficulty, will pick up the belt should he emerge victorious. The now non-title is the first offering of Top Rank Promotions new series “Metro PCS Friday Night Knockout.” During Beltran’s first attempt on the scale he weighed in at 136 pounds. Two hours later Beltran weighed in again, as permitted by the Nevada State Athletic…
