Ronda Rousey Returns To Action AT UFC 175
By Brandon Stubbs, Contributing Writer
Well Ronda Rousey will be back in action on July 5 at UFC 175 in Las Vegas. The thing is, it will not be against rumored names like Gina Carano, Cris Cyborg, Holly Holm or even Cat Zingano. Instead getting the title shot is Alexis Davis. The match up will serve as the co-main event to the fight card which will be head line by UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman defending his belt against Lyoto Machida.
Davis holds a career record of 16-5 and has reeled off five straight, with three of those coming under the UFC banner. She most recently won a close split decision over Jessica Eye at UFC 170. Owns black belt in both Ju-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with 7 career submission wins. She is widely regarded as being among the top three 135lb fighter in the world, so she would be deserving of a shot. It was more of a shock that she won the “Ronda Sweepstakes” over the other bigger names in the division.
For the recent weeks smoke screens had been blown from all sorts of sides and angles. We had Cris Cyborg mapping out plans to drop from 145lbs to 135lbs in hopes of landing a deal with UFC, which has yet to happen. We had UFC President Dana White meeting with Legacy FC Bantamweight Champ and former pro boxer Holly Holm, only to say her demands were too stiff for the UFC and they were passing on signing her at this time. Next you had Gina Carano out on TV shows and interviews talking about she wasn’t retired from MMA and would be open to a come back. But this talk was only to angle and promote another one of her awful direct to DVD movies she has coming out. And than there is Cat Zingano, who is still recovering from knee injury and mourning the loss of her husband from earlier this year who just got flat out passed over.
For Ronda Rousey she is still undefeated now at 9-0 and coming off of her first knockout win over Sara McMann in February. When she faces off with Davis she will be coming off of filming the movie “Entourage” and starts other films later this year. One has to wonder how much longer she will stay active if “Hollywood” keeps calling. Until then we will see if she can keep her reign of dominance going come July.
