Pacquiao To Announce Next Opponent Friday
According to a report by ESPN.com, former champion and future Hall-of-Fame inductee Manny Pacquiao will announce his next opponent on Friday. Will this be his last professional fight before heading into retirement? Inquiring minds want to know. The announcement will take a page out of the LeBron playbook and be televised on TruTV, home of Top Rank’s Friday Night Knockout series.
Opponent speculation took center stage after Pacquiao announced he recovered from shoulder surgery and was ready for his next bout. (As you recall, Pacquiao injured his shoulder during preparations for the Mayweather fight last May and required surgery in the aftermath.) Lacking a surplus of warm welterweight bodies in the Top Rank stable it’s fairly apparent who’s in content for the golden ticket.
Leading the charge as a potential foes for the showdown are Tim Bradley (WBO welterweight champion), Terrence Crawford (WBO super lightweight champion) and Amir Khan (WBC silver welterweight champion). Should Pacquiao select Bradley, this will be their third meeting after splitting their first two. If Crawford receives the call, fans potentially see the lightest Pacquiao they’ve seen in recent years as Crawford campaigns at 140 pounds. Riding a tremendous wave of popularity in 2015, Crawford may have some wiggle room at the negotiations table when determining a weight. The final front runner Khan, like Bradley, competes at 147 pounds but is the least likely selection if you’ve been watching the on-going soap opera between his manager Al Haymon and the powers that be at HBO. Things could swing in his favor since HBO has new leadership at the helm (Peter Nelson as the Executive Vice President of HBO Sports) but don’t hold your breath.
Also lurking in the background Lucas Matthysse, Diego Chaves and just maybe Mikey Garcia. Hey, you never know, stranger things have happened in boxing.
