Pacquiao vs Thurman Next? Unification Bout Reportedly In the Works
The top-heavy welterweight division is reportedly in the works to deliver another unification bout, and it doesn’t involve Terence Crawford or Errol Spence Jr.
On Wednesday, Mike Coppinger of Fox Sports tweeted that WBA world champion Manny Pacquiao and WBA super world champion Keith Thurman are closing in on a July 2oth pay-per-view showdown to unify their versions of the welterweight title strap.
In their respective previous outings, Manny Pacquiao dominated Adrien Broner to win by unanimous decision to retain the strap while Thurman defeated Josesito Lopez in his first fight in nearly two years due to injury. Both bouts took place in January of this year.
What does this fight mean for the welterweight division? For starters, it means one less champion in a crowded division but on a grander scale, it serves as another tournament match-up, for lack of a better term, to establish who is the best welterweight fighter in the world. With both Pacquiao and Thurman residing under the PBC banner, the bout shouldn’t be that difficult to make.
