Chavez Jr. vs. Vera II Confirmed For March 1
SAN ANTONIO, TX –
When Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Bryan Vera met the first time in September 2013 in Los Angeles, the bout was overshadowed bye events leading up to the fight, namely Chavez Jr.’s weight. Add into the mix, injuries in sparring, cancellations, it seemed as if this fight was never going to happen, but it did.
As suspected, Chavez Jr. did not make the contracted weight.
After going back and forth more times than a tennis match on the weight issue, parties agreed to a 10 round bout to be fought at a catchweight of 173 pounds. After conditioning for so many months to fight at a lighter weight, the situation looked bleak for Vera. Fears abounded that he could be brutalized and over powered by the clearly larger Chavez Jr.
But that didn’t happen.
Vera emerged from his corner with a vengeance and outworked Chavez for the majority of the bout. Chavez Jr. landed big blows but they were too few and too far in between. But the judges didn’t think so. In the end, Chavez Jr. was awarded a unanimous decision victory, much to the dismay of those watching (except his camp), with final scores 96-94, 97-93, and 98-92.
Fast forward to 2014, both parties agreed to a rematch that will take place March 1st, this time at the Alamodome in San Antonio. This time, the participants have agreed upon a 168 pound weight limit with Chavez Jr. facing a fine of $250,000 if he fails to make weight according to reports.
