3 Ways You Can Sound Cool About Soccer
So you are just getting into Soccer and want to be more in touch with the workings of the game. Maybe your child is playing the sport and you want to seem hip to your kids? Could be that you are tired of the hipster guy with a full beard who brags about his love of the game. That same guy scoffs at anyone who he thinks is not as knowledgeable as he is. Or could it be you want to impress that pretty lady in the Colombia national team jersey who comes to your sports bar. Or ladies you may want to catch the interest of the fit guy in a Chelsea jersey you always see at the gym.
Well if you can execute a flawless British, Australian, or Italian accent no need to read any further. You could just say I know Soccer and everyone would treat you like the president of FIFA. If you are still reading then like myself you don’t have an accent but still want to be hip to the game.
I grew up playing Soccer at the age of four. I truly love the game along with the intricate details around it. So I am going to share three quick tips that wont make you an expert but elevate you from beginner.
- Only called Soccer in America: The Euros and the Olympics are happening this summer. Which means Sport bars and pubs will be packed with fans of the game. So rather than ask who’s playing in the soccer game? Go with, “What teams are playing in the Football match ?” That table of Italian or German fans might happily buy you a beer just for calling it by the proper name.
- It’s a Pitch not a field: Here is the technical definition – A football pitch (also known as a football field or soccer field) is the playing surface for the game of association football. Made of turf (grass) or artificial turf, its dimensions and markings are defined by Law 1 of the Laws of the Game, “The Field of Play”. So next time that Barcelona game is on tell the cute girl or guy with the Barca jersey, and say what a beautiful pitch at the Camp Nou stadium. Trust me that will start a conversation.
- Avoid being Captain Obvious: I am a Manchester United fan, I like the player Messi do you know who that is, I can Bend it like Beckham. Unless you truly know about those things I just mentioned, and can follow it up with discussion I beg of you don’t say them. That’s like asking a Basketball fan “You heard of Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant? You would be better off saying nothing than looking lame. So if you mention a famous team learn some players names who are not Messi or Ronaldo. The Bernabeu, Allianz Arena, San Siro are the names of stadiums for Real Madrid(Spain) Bayern Munech(Germany) and AC/Inter Milan(Italy). Learn the names of historic arenas from all over the world. Plenty of stadiums have historic and intriguing names mention one of these and go from zero to hero.
So go out there and bond with those Soccer I mean Football fans at your local sports bar. If you do kick it off with that cute girl in some European or South American jersey the least you can do is ask if she has a friend for me. Gooooooooooaaaaaaaaallllllllll!!!!
